Back in the Victorian days the French Riviera was a favourite spot for "well-to-do" English tourists. Places like Cannes, Cagnes-sur-Mer, Nice, and other seaside villages and towns were geared-up to recieve English-speaking visitors. There is a lot of evidence of this piece of history such as the various "Hôtel Victoria" and the "Promenades des Anglais" (the Walkway of the English) in Nice. Unfortunately the Principality wasn't getting much of this very profitable Anglo-Saxon tourism. This how Monte-Carlo came into existence, it was essentially a scheme to bring-in English tourism by building a famous Casino. The plan worked quite well and the Monte-Carlo casino became one of the most famous on the French Riviera.
Today Monte-Carlo is by far the best known part of Monaco; in fact most tourists always assume Monte-Carlo is the same as Monaco, while it is simply a section of it. This is the place to go if you want to see luxury and sports cars, or to catch a glimpse of you favourite movie stars. In other words, if you have a lot of money, you will definetely be able to spend it all within the day; be it on your super-luxury 5 star suite at the "Hôtel Hermitage", exclusive dinner at the "Hôtel de Paris", going shopping along the "Boulevard des Moulin", or simply wasting all you life savings at the Casino.
