The Rock, officially called “Monaco-Ville” and commonly referred to as “le Rocher”, is essentially a rocky plateau which sticks out of the sea. Its sides are very steep cliffs and it is surrounded by an impregnable fortress. This structure would be quite an impressive obstacle for a medieval army, and it is not difficult to realise why Monaco stayed independent for all those centuries. Atop the Rock you can find the historical & cultural center of Monaco, with the Prince's Palace, the Old Town, the Cathedral, and a multitude of museums and cultural attractions. Therefore this location has probably the highest touristic value in the Principality, not to mention the fantastic view of the rest of Monaco.
My two favorite spots on the Rock are the Musée Océanographique and the Cathedral.
